About Me
Bio (by Steve Payne):
Christine "Keena" Friedrichsmeier grew up in the heart of Northern Ontario where her observation of wildlife created two passions in her life. One was the need to learn about these beautiful creatures, which led her to pursue an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Guelph.
But at a very young age she knew she wanted more. Keena wanted to bring what she saw with her eyes to life on paper. It was time to draw. And draw she did. Very early on in her development people saw there was a talent, but talent that needed to be developed. It was then that her grandfather, a talented artist in Germany before WWII, saw Keena's talent and knew the potential. As with with most talent, time and practice developed that potential and as a teenager she was winning awards at local art shows with her wildlife art.
Being an artist and a zoologist allows her to pursue her two loves. She draws her inspiration from what she sees in the field. One unusual inspiration occurred after being chased by a grizzly bear while living on the Mid-Coast of British Columbia. Now a portrait of a grizzly hangs as a prize possession in a home in Penticton.
Keena now lives with her family in the remote northern Ontario community of Sioux Lookout, where she continues to follow her two passions.
She is a proud member of The World Wide Nature Artists Group and the International Plein Air Painters.
Artist Statement:
Both an artist and a zoologist with a passion for wildlife and wild places, I am fascinated by the natural world. Its beauty, fragility and complexity; all of the effects it has on my senses – textures, colours, sounds and smells; the light!; the moods – joy, solemnity, awe and wonder are the inspiration for my paintings.
I work in acrylics, oils and mixed media. My art has been exhibited across Canada and in New York, and is in collections in Canada, the USA, Europe and Australia. For more information, please visit my website at www.keena.ca or naturepainter.com.
Paintings for people who love nature. Express your wild side....
