About Me
I live in a small village in northwestern Vermont with my husband, our two dogs and two cats. I have been painting and drawing for a long time, and animals have always been a favorite subject. Eventually I ended up with a BA in Art & Psychology from Goddard College. Though my first exhibits ? throughout New England and Montreal, Canada - were in the more abstract medium of collage, and the wearable medium of pieced clothing, I eventually began painting with pastels. I found that I could easily pursue my love of ?chiaroscuro? - the play of dark against light. The soft, yet brilliant nature of pastel painting is what enticed me into working more representationally ? nature, people, and then ? aha! ? animals! I found pastels to be wonderful for rendering the soft textures of fur and a rich and warm means of capturing the depth of eyes.

Working from photographs, with acute attention to form, expression, and personality, my goal with every full color pet portrait is to capture each individual with such veracity that upon first viewing by the pet?s ?person?, the reaction elicited will every time be: ?That is him/her exactly!?

Eyes are important in my paintings. My husband and others claim that my painting trademark is that ?the eyes follow you wherever you are in the room?.

I become very attached to the subjects I paint - it is truly like having one of my children leave home when it comes time to part with the finished painting.

I specialize in ?full body? portraits, but will happily do head portraits. My style varies from rather stylized to quite photo-realistic. The photos from which I work determine the style of each painting. Lighting, clear definition ? or lack of definition - the pose, the animal?s expression all come into play in determining what style evolves. I prefer to focus on the pet alone, and will create my own backdrop as I feel is important to the enhancement of the subject. I rarely define backgrounds unless this is important to a client and doesn?t detract from the pet. I do not vary the position or lighting of the subject.

All portraits are rendered on high quality, acid-free pressed paper stock and sprayed lightly with an archival quality fixative.
